BMW's New Electric SUV Concept: Vision Neue Klasse X

The concept not only previews next year's iX3, but also heralds a new design language and BMW's first bespoke electric vehicle platform. BMW President Oliver Zipse says, "Neue Klasse is much more than just another car or a specific concept."

The BMW Vision Neue Klasse X is not just a concept. It is a window into a real revolution within BMW's future. It not only paves the way for the brand's first bespoke electric vehicle platform with rounded battery cells but also previews a new design language and the next generation of iDrive. Serving as the SUV counterpart to the Vision Neue Klasse sedan unveiled in 2023, the new X is much more than an elevated version of its predecessor concept.

Modernizing a design first seen in the 1930s, it features a significantly altered front fascia with a retro-futuristic kidney grille. Vertically aligned LEDs, similar to those on the 2021 i Vision Circular, flank the slim, upright kidneys with illuminated contours. As the driver approaches, LEDs integrated into the grille and kidneys fold into greeting lights to welcome the owner. The rear lights stretch nearly the entire width of the vehicle and are divided by the minimalist BMW logo seen in recent concepts. A prominent roof spoiler adds a sporty touch, and there is no rear wiper to disturb the SUV's rear. Inside, the cabin utilizes 100% natural surface materials produced entirely without petroleum. Additionally, injection-molded components are made from marine plastics for the first time in this model.

In addition to design, BMW shares some key technical specifications related to Gen6 batteries. Transitioning from current Gen5 prismatic cells to round cells, the new batteries will increase energy density by over 20%. Adopting an 800-volt system boosts charging speed by 30%, providing a driving range of 186 miles (300 kilometers) after just a 10-minute charge. Speaking of range, the German luxury brand claims a 30% increase in range.
